Enhancing the Spirit of Christmas through Christmas Carols
Aside from Christmas masses and giving of gifts, Christmas carols are indispensable part of the Christmas season also. We can hear these songs almost everywhere during the yuletide season. These songs remind people on the spirit of Christmas – giving, loving, selfless sacrifice and the reason for the celebration, the birth of Jesus Christ. These songs are also used by children each time they go carolling from one house to another.
Christmas carols are songs about the birth of Jesus Christ the saviour. These songs talks about the humble origin and birth of the saviour, the different interpretations of his coming to earth to live with us and the different views about the season. There are hundreds or even thousands of songs composed, compiled and played during the season throughout the ages around the world.
One of the popular Christmas Carols is the song entitled “Joy to the World”. This song speaks of the joy the world or the people should feel on this Christmas season because of the coming of Jesus Christ. His coming should make us happy because with that, we are assured that we are saved from the first man’s mortal sin which, if not washed by the blood of the saviour, will lead us into eternal destruction (We may have different interpretations on this concept but our unity in celebrating the birth of Christ only shows that amidst the differences in religion and interpretation, we still believe in something common.) The line “let every heart, prepare him room” tells us that we should not just think of the gifts, parties and food during the season but let us give Jesus a space in our hearts so that he may dwell in us all not just during the season but all throughout our lives.
Other Christmas carols are “Silent Night”, “Little Drummer Boy”, “Santa Clause is coming to Town”, “We Three Kings”, “Away in a Manger”, and “Christmas in Our Hearts”. All of these songs and others in the long list of Christmas songs talks about the essence of Christmas mentioned above. Aside from these, composers also composed Christmas ballads. An example of these is the country song “Please Daddy, Don’t be drunk this Christmas” which talks about a child’s plea for the Christmas season. There are also songs about love during the holiday on broken hearts and lovers. Example of these are “All I want for Christmas is You”, “Christmas Won’t be the same Without You”, “Merry Christmas Darling” and “My only Wish (This Year).”
